Slavit undertook the Riverfest project while serving as an artist-in-residence at the Cambridge Public Schools. She worked with the students––"Their grandparents only helped with the sewing," she clarifies––to create full-body fabric self-portraits for public display. Slavit's project offered them a life-sized opportunity to see themselves as inherently connected to the arts and crafts of their families; the Riverfest welcomed them as not only members of their city's social landscape, but genuine contributors to its cultural identity.
